Papagayo Energy (PE) is a joint venture with Ove Sotberg, former Vice President in NTE responsible for development of Energy and head of the engineer group in NTE. The company has established La Campana, Nicaragua and is owned 90 % by Papagayo Energy. La Campana has all the rights to a 7 km2 property in Rivas, Nicaragua with excelent wind conditions. The potential for wind production at this site is about 75 MW. The project was started in 2008 and we are still working to get all the necessary licences. We hope to reach financial close Q1 2016. Nicaragua has installed about 1000 MW of electricity for a 5.5 million population compared to Norway’s 30,000 MW of power for a smaller population of 5 million people. Nicaragua is in constant lack of power. Nicaragua has a huge hydro power potential (3,000 MW), and more wind power potential (800 MW) to go along with a geothermal potential in the same range as the wind.
Most power production in Nicaragua at this point is from old oil-fired power plants with low efficiency. The plan for the country is replace these archaic polluting power plants with efficient plants producing clean, renewable energy. Nicaragua is an undeveloped country however, and cannot finance this plan without participation from abroad. The project is supported by NORAD – The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation. Ove Sotberg is project manager, CEP and Chairman of the board in PE.
Grenor Hungary is a company developing a combined heat and power in Szombethaly, a city close to the Austrian border. The company was supposed to supply this city of 80,000 inhabitants with about 60 GWh of heat as well as delivering about 50 GWh of electricity. The chosen technology gives us the opportunity to switch between power and heat, depending on the demand. Maximum heat capacity is 14 MW and maximum electricity capacity is 8.3 MW. The project used to have full support of the local municipality and the Hungarian government. Szombethaly has big environment goals and one of these is to reduce the climate emissions by 50 %. Since most of the heat to the district heating company comes from natural gas-fired heat plants, we will reduce the emissions form heat production by more than 50 %. Grenor has withdrawn from this project due to pressure from local politicians for bribing.
Grenor (and Entrogruppen) is in partnership with Fibertech, TPB Sarl, Effektpartner, Grenaa Effektreserve and others for this company in Douala, Cameroon. This company will buy power plants from EffektPartner and Grenaa Effektreserve, and buy additional power plants in order to install 150 MW in douala, Cameroon. There are power outages in Cameroon every day, especially in the dry season (December to June), so their problems are huge and their needs are great. Depending on the progress with the Cameroonian Government, our plan is to be producing power starting first half of 2016. The plan is to use natural gas from local production in Douala. The company will also sign a DzLetter of Intendz with the government for one or two hydropower projects. Cameroon has a huge hydropower potential (> 20 000 MW) and also a huge potential for biomass power. Installed capacity is about 1000 MW for about 23 million people. Through the 100 % owned subsidiary, Eurel (before that, Entro small hydro power), Entro-gruppen AS had direct ownership in 3 hydro power plants in Norway; Grytfossen, Ryssdal and Jordal Power plants. The power plants were developed and build in partnership with Norsk Gronn Kraft. The portfolio was sold in 2010.
In addition Eurel was the owner of a part of the profit from 6 small hydro power plants in Norway. This is an agreement with Norsk Gronn Kraft (www.norskgronnkraft.no) involving all 6 power plants (Skogbauna, Tommerdal, Grytfossen, Jordal, Ryssdal og HAvdal). This cashflow was sold in 2012.
